Sony PSP

November 30th, 2005 Pankaj Comments

I just picked up a Sony PlayStation Portable with Star Wars Battlefront II. I can’t say too much about the game yet because I haven’t had a chance to play but I’ve spent a good amount of time setting up some RSS feeds for text and podcasts on my new PSP and it works GREAT! The WiFi is easy to configure and get up and running. I’d eventually like to get it to the point where I could synch my BlogBridge Subscription list with my PSP.

The PSP is much bigger than my 3G iPod but it also has built in Wifi along with the ability to play games and watch movies, listen to music, surf the web, read my RSS subscriptions, and also expand beyond Sony’s original firmware.. Of course you can change the psp themes as well.

The PSP looks just like any USB drive when you plug it into Linux and putting your MP3s on the PSP is as simple as using the cp my.mp3 /media/usbdisk/psp/MUSIC command.

I’ll post more information about pictures, videos, RSS, and the browser when I have more time to tinker with it. If anyone knows about an email reader with pop support for the PSP, I’d love to hear about it

Firefox 1.5 Released?????

November 29th, 2005 Pankaj Comments

Digg says it and Jonathan posted on his blog that Firefox 1.5 is released.

Though we’re able to grab a file dated from November 28th that looks to be a release, no official announcement has been made from the Mozilla Org about Firefox 1.5 officially being released. Even the Mozilla site mozilla.org is stil showing Firefox 1.07 and Firefox 1.5 RC 3 being available for download.

The files accessible through the links posted on these sites are most likely some mirrors which have received the 1.5 version while others are still in the process of synching up.

Google Analytics Works!

November 22nd, 2005 Pankaj Comments

Google appears to have drastically underestimated the demand for the service and is now playing catch up in providing the necessary infrastructure to support Analytics. They’re not taking any new members until the infrastructure upgrades are done.

I checked my Google Analytics account on Sunday and I finally had some reports to view. This is by far the best breakdown of website statistics I’ve seen from Commercial or Free software packages. Last night I was talking to someone about Google Analytics and showing them some stats and they were amazed at the depth of information in Google Analytics. They were even more surprised at the fact that it is free and they are paying a hefty sum of $ to a commerical software vendor for an web site statistics package that doesn’t offer half the reporting facilities.

I think the product has a huge amount of potential and in it’s current state, it offers a HUGE benefit over the usual web statistics packages. I find the reports to be very in-depth, fairly easy to use and understand.

It would be nice if they made the map interactive so that it’s easier to zoom into where a visitor was visiting your site from. I’d also like to see an easier way of managing the Google Adwords integration. Right now, it’s a little confusing.

Overall, now that it has started working, I think it’s another great product offered for free by Google. I am curious to see how Google Analytics might work on an Intranet web server …

The Terms of Service, however, will probably leave many businesses, and some individuals a little upset at the overall freedom with which Google can use your trademarks, etc. See the blog posting here for more info…

OpenSuse 10 is solid!

November 17th, 2005 Pankaj Comments

I downloaded and installed OpenSuse 10 on my laptop along with Fedora Core 4. The installation screens were prettier than Fedora but that’s very easy to accomplish. Installation was also a bit easier than Fedora but not by much.

When you first log into OpenSuse you’ll notice that Novell/Suse has spent quite a bit of time on aesthetics. OpenSuse, whether you use Gnome 2.12 or KDE 3.4.2 is NICE looking. I haven’t spent much time on Gnome only because I’ve been using Gnome of a number of years and am forcing myself to use KDE.

OpenSuse also makes available a number of other window managers like xcfe, fvwm, Gnome, along with KDE. There are quite a few applications included in OpenSuse under KDE, such as KRPMBuilder for graphically building your own RPMs, Umberllo – a UML modeller, KTorrent – a BitTorrent Client, KWifiManager (which I don’t like too much), KMLDonkey – for P2P, a few RSS Readers like Akregator and Blam.

Package Management is handled through YaST along with most System level configurations. I think YaST is a great tool but I don’t like it for package management. Yum and Apt are so much easier to work with, script, find repositories for, etc….speaking of repositories, there aren’t that many good repositories for OpenSuse as there are for Fedora. It would be nice if RPM packagers would try to employ some logic in their RPM spec files so that the same spec file could build RPMs for OpenSuse, CentOS, Fedora, etc. I’ve done this for some custom applications I’ve written and it works very nicely on OpenSuse 10 and Fedora Core 4. Who knows how badly it will break when new versions come out but YaST for package management has to go!

Overall, OpenSuse is stable, offers some cutting edge applications like xen ( though it’s very difficult to get a virtual machine running ), all my standard applications work ( some with tweaking ). I like OpenSuse 10 on my IBM Thinkpad T40 and have no intentions of removing it. What I would like to do is get xen working so that I can run an instance of Fedora within OpenSuse

Google Analytics

November 17th, 2005 Pankaj Comments
I signed up for Google Analytics on Tuesday to monitor this blog and see traffic patterns, if any, and really just to test out what Google Analytics is great at. Well, two days have gone by and I’ve yet to get any information from Google Analytics. I keep seeing the same message every twelve hours

“Waiting for Data

Analytics has been successfully installed and data is being gathered now. Your first reports will be ready within twelve hours.”

I’m not sure if I’ve done some thing wrong or if Google Analytics is just having problems but I doubt I messed up while pasting in some Javascript ….

Please let me know if you’re facing similar issues

Yahoo’s Hollywoodification | CNET News.com

November 15th, 2005 Pankaj Comments

This is a very interesting story. Maybe it is time to bet big on the G-M duopoly (Google-Microsoft, not General Motors) instead of the G-Y-M (Google-Yahoo-Microsft) triumvirate.

November 14, 2005 1:14 PM PST
Yahoo made waves in the industry hiring big guns from Hollywood to run the company and pushing its broadband and media business. Apparently, the moves are causing waves within the company as well. The hiring of Chief Executive Terry Semel from Warner Bros. and Media Group Head Lloyd Braun from ABC has sparked a culture battle inside the search giant, the Los Angeles Times reported on Monday.

Firefox 1.5 RC2

November 11th, 2005 Pankaj Comments

I just downloaded Firefox 1.5 RC2 for Linux and built the RPM for Fedora Core 4 using Thomas Chung’s spec file from http://www.fedoranews.org. I just modified it to use the RC2 source instead of RC1. So far, Firefox 1.5 RC2 is running well on my PC. It’s stable, no noticeable performance issues and not noticeable performance increases either.

I haven’t yet found any websites with rendering problems either so overall, stable, smooth and clean.
