I’ve been playing around with Windows Live Local and Google Local. I did a few searches like “children party places in north platte, ne”.
Apparently, Google Local returns many more results than Windows Live Local does. Windows Live Local returned one result which was in Lincoln, NE for Folsom Children’s Zoo & Botanical Gardens.
Google Local returned seven results. Five of the seven were for North Platte, NE. However, NONE of the results returned by Google were for a place where a children’s party could be held. Results from Google included:
- Keep North Platte Beautiful
(308) 534-8100
715 S Jeffers St
North Platte, NE 69101
-
North Platte Code Compliance
211 W 3rd St, North Platte, NE
(308) 535-6675
- North Platte Police Dept
715 S Jeffers St, North Platte, NE
(308) 535-6789
Not much search relevance from Google when I’m searching in North Platte, NE. However, when I do the same search in San Francisco, Windows Live Local returns zero results. Yes, ZERO. Google returns twenty results about which only five were relevant children party places.
Bottom line is that more isn’t necessarily better.

Michael Arrington of TechCrunch posted that Microsoft would be integrating RSS into Outlook 12. Smart! one of my biggest gripes about RSS readers is that I can’t easily forward a posting to someone without having to open it in my browser and then sending the link to the intended recipient. It’s great that MS finally gets it
Well, I don’t use Outlook at home, work or anywhere. I use Novell’s Evolution client for Linux. It has its quirks but it works with MS Exchange on the backend, hence, I use it to connect to my work email servers. This posting is not necessarily applauding MS, though, the general Windows population will benefit from this announcement, this posting is about how Evolution started having built in RSS support but when going from version 1.4 to 2.0, Ximian ( now owned by Novell ) decided to remove RSS integration from their email client. Rather than moving forward and having better RSS integration, they conceded the space to third party RSS readers. I wish Novell would not only put RSS support back into Evolution, but I hope they expand on the feature set and allow classifications, tagging, categorization of RSS feeds and items within the feed and also give us the ability to email a RSS item in som capacity.

Interesting article on Emacs but most people using Emacs today are using it on Intel Hardware ( and PowerPC base Macs ). I think the writer is misisng the one major point that people love about emacs - The ability customize your environment to work the way you want. The author proposes making keyboard bindings that make your PC work more like a traditional unix workstation, e.g. IBM RS/6000 or Sun Sparc station.
I’ve been an Emacs user since 1996 and carry my .emacs profile to every computer I use…all being Intel based PCs. This is the power of Emacs, I can have keyboard shortcuts for just about any application or command I run within Emacs. The only downfall is when someone who doesn’t know my key bindings suddenly starts using my Emacs session.

As indicated on Moosy, Firefox 1.5 for SUSE is available as an RPM.
I just want to thank the Anonymous comment, presumably from Moosy Blog for correcting me. The OSS version of SuSE is called SUSE Linux OSS 10.0 and NOT OpenSuse. OpenSuse is the name of the open source project sponsored by Novell. Thanks for pointing that out. Sorry folks.

I’ve been using OpenSuse for a few months now and though I like OpenSuse enough to be still using it on my Thinkpad T40, I am a little perplexed as to why 1) so few YUM repositories exist, 2) Why YAST ( which I am beginning to dislike more and more ) is so stupid that it won’t do any GPG checks on RPMs to authenticate them, 3) Why the updates to OpenSuse 10 is completely non-existant. I think the last time an update for OpenSuse 10 was available was probably eight to ten weeks ago. Now that I’m using OpenSuse, I’m realizing that Fedora Core is a product better supported by the community than OpenSuse is yet. It’s a shame because OpenSuse works very well out of the box.
I still haven’t been able to get Fedora Core 4 working in Xen on OpenSuse 10
If anyone has any suggestions or can offer any help, please drop me a note.

Del.icio.us, the shared bookmarking and tagging business was acquired by Yahoo as reported by Reuters on CNET. Yahoo is sure on a Web 2.0 building and buying streak …

Wow. I never thought I would say this but for a Beta, I am amazed at 1) Windows Live Local beating Google to the punch and putting this Web 2.0 application up, 2) how well Firefox 1.5 on Fedora Core 4 is supported, 3) the level of detail that Windows Live Local exhibits. I was able to zoom in on my elementary school with “Birds Eye” view and see that the picture hasn’t been updated in a few years. I also found that the location for my house on the map was incorrect but I was able to find my office with no problem.
Microsoft is obviously putting in a lot of work and emphasizing the “Web Desktopification” that is slowly happening with applications like JotSpot, Writely, etc. I am not a fan of Microsoft but competition from Google, Yahoo/Del.icio.us, JotSpot, Flickr and other Web 2.0 companies have given Microsoft a wake-up call. Whether this means that Microsoft will change their ways, I doubt it.

I just finished reading the free Tux Magazine Issue Number 8 ( 9 is also available ). It’s a very good quality linux magazine from the same publisher as Linux Journal The magazine is completely free, available as a PDF. Please try to subscribe and download the magazine from the official web site so that publisher can have a fairly accurate count of readers. By downloading the PDF from other sources, such as BitTorrent makes it harder for the publisher to keep track of the number of readers.
