Internet cafes in rural India? | CNET News.com

It’s about time that big technology companies began looking into selling computers designed for developing nations. It’s good business for them and it’s good to get rural areas in developing nations trained in using computers. Eventually, people in the community will buy their own computers instead of there being only a few Community based Kiosks. I’m just wondering whether these Community PCs will be running Linux or some stripped down version of Windows.

PodTech.net: Silicon Valley, Technology, & Media Podcast

What’s going on at PodTech lately? When I got my first iPod it was mainly for music. As Apple integrated in Podcasting, I began using my iPod almost exclusively for listening to Podcasts. My two favorite podcasts were VentureVoice and PodTech.

I’m sorry to say that I’ve been listening to Podtech less and less because the podcasts have been sounding more and more like informercials for Juniper, Intel, Barracuda, and Maxtor. I was hoping that after raising more than $5 million, PodTech’s content would be getting more organized and more informational and less infomercial. John and the rest of the team, if you’re reading this, please consider going back to your roots and interviewing interesting people doing interesting things in technology and media. One or two podcasts on Juniper’s products is more than enough. Content like the VentureOne summit coverage, Trends in Social Networking, Mashup Camp Venture Capital Session with Jeff Clavier of SoftTechVC, and Mark Cuban InfoTalk with John Furrier and much much more are the types of informational podcasts that made PodTech interesting to those of us not living in the Valley and also to those living in and around the Valley.

I would really like to see more content like this. You talk about the globalization of Silicon Valley in many of your podcasts, your show can continue to contribute considerably to the globalization of Silicon Valley.

rBuilder Online - Front Page

rPath has a great idea to allow people to cook up their own Linux distributions using only a browser! However, it is way too painful to work with if you want to use anything outside of the packages already on their platform.

For example, I wanted to build an appliance around the Manusya Project. However, my RPM packages aren’t already on the rPath system. To get my application into rPath, I have to download and install the rPath Linux CDs, install it onto a PC, then rebuild my application using their conary package management system. Once i have the conary packages build I can easily add them to a templated system that I’d like to build and wait till the ISO’s are generated. It would be easier if they offered a VMPlayer compatible image so I could easily get a basic rPath Linux system up and running to build the conary packages.

It would also be nice if they offered a way to convert RPM packages and DEB packages to Conary. Pretty nice concept, it’s just too much pain to create an appliance that uses another packaging system and another flavor of Linux.

CIO Blogs - Who owns the Internet? We have a map that shows you. |

Very interesting map of the ownership of the Internet by carriers in the US. Mr. Worthen also touches on Net Neutrality, which I have blogged about previously here and here.

Fedora Core 5 Review: - The Linux Information Resource

I got FC5 installed on my Thinkpad T40 (new install) and on my Dell desktop (upgrade). I haven’t had any problems with the installation. I still find it a bit annoying that the Intel Centrino firmware has to be downloaded after the installation. I know it’s done because of licensing issues but it’s still annoying, along with the various multimedia code stuff. Fedora Core is definitely not a distro for people new to Linux. I would suggest Ubuntu or Suse for those that are new to Linux. More of the applications that Windows users are used to can be found out of the box in Ubuntu or Suse. Overall, I’m happy with Fedora Core 5 with the exception of two things

  1. True profile management like scpm under Suse
  2. Hibernating a laptop isn’t as straightforward as it is with Suser

Here’s a nice little review of FC5.

Official Google Blog: Spring is the season for love (and data)

It’s about time. Google finally launched a Finance site to comete with Microsoft, Yahoo, and all the other financial sites out there. The difference being, Google has used their search technology to make it easier for people to get the information they want on a particular company without having to remember the ticker, the exchange it’s traded on, etc.

What is interesting is that if you pull up a company such as Apple or Google, you will see links to Yahoo! Finance and Reuters under Management and The Bios and Trading Activity for each member of the management team.
