Saul, great post and I tend to agree with you. We still need desktop based services because we’re not always connected and having applications that interact well with eachother is important. Rather than Windows and Microsfot, I would present that Linux is a desktop solution that should be examined in more detail.
OpenOffice is a well integrated office suite. Novell Evolution and Mozilla Thunderbird are very stable and integrate well with a Linux desktop and OpenOffice. Evolution works with Exchange through Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA), Thunderbird supports RSS, IMAP, POP. Linux has Firefox, Ephiphany, Opera and other browsers. Linux also has IM clients (gaim integrates with Evolution), VoIP clients, etc.
Linux will allow you a choice of desktop managers - KDE and Gnome. A Linux distro like Ubuntu or Suse will also give you MP3, DVD, Video playback right out of the box.
Give it a test by downloading VMWare’s free player and a VMWare Linux browser appliance image or a community image. You will be able to run Linux as a virtual machine right within your Windows installation and if you don’t like it delete the image directory and uninstall VMWare Player.

Disney just decided to make “Desperate Housewives”, “Lost”, “Commander in Chief”, and the entire season of “Alias” available for free online beginning in May. The free shows will be advertiser supported.
I think this is a great step by Disney-ABC and will, in the long run, prove to be even more profitable for them. Not to mention, it will be a blow to all the “pirated” downloads of these shows available on the Internet. “Why download illegally when I can see the show for free - legally?” People in different countries will be able to see these shows when and as audiences in the US see them. This will, undoubtedly, further fuel DVD sales in the US and abroad for these shows.
It will be interesting to see if Disney offers iPod compatible formats of the shows from their website and if iTunes will continue to charge for downloads of these shows.
It will also be interesting to see what the telcos do about the bandwidth and if they will use this as an opportunity to charge Disney-ABC more for their pipes. Aye Caramba!

Pathetic, Big Business controlling government, stiffling competition, stiffling innovation, some would even say, penalizing competition - and IMHO, a horrible decision by Republicans to make another decision along partisan lines. “Let’s protect free markets when it protects our pockets”
